Winter at Thistledown Hollow

I lost three hours to this audiobook because Virtual Voice’s narration is the audio equivalent of finding a secret stash of cookies you forgot you had—warm, slightly mischievous, and impossible to resist. The synthetic narrator leans hard into the absurdity, turning Wren’s flustered one-liners and the villagers’ cryptic gossip into a performance that oscillates between dry wit and full-throated dramatic sighs. The world feels alive in a way that’s rare for cozy fantasy; the pine forests smell like pine forests, the magic feels like a poorly calibrated space heater, and the social dynamics are so specific (the baker who moonlights as a ghost, the teenager who communicates exclusively via interpretive dance) that I kept pausing to take notes like it was a masterclass in absurd realism. That said, the pacing hiccups mid-way through when the plot lurches from “village shenanigans” to “ancestral curse drama”—it’s like someone hit pause on the chaos and forgot to press play again. And while Yates’ humor lands more often than not, there’s a moment where a character’s dramatic reveal is undercut by a rogue snowball fight that reads as tonally whiplash-y. Still, by the final chapter, I’d happily trade my commute for a seat at Thistledown Hollow’s next town meeting.
