I’ve listened to a lot of Wodehouse, but *Carry On, Jeeves* narrated by Martin Jarvis might be the platonic ideal of the form. His voice for Bertie is a revelation: all plummy self-importance one moment, then crumbling into panicked squeaks the next, like a man watching his carefully constructed lies unravel in real time. Jeeves, by contrast, is delivered with such understated gravitas that you half-expect him to materialize in your living room with a silver tray and a solution to your problems. The standout stories here—like ‘The Artistic Career of Corky’ or ‘Jeeves and the Unbidden Guest’—showcase Wodehouse at his most structurally clever, where the setup and payoff are so seamless you don’t realize you’ve been laughing for five minutes straight until your ribs ache. That said, a couple of the shorter pieces (‘The Great Sermon Handicap’) feel slightly undercooked, relying more on Bertie’s narration than the usual intricate plotting. And while Jarvis’ female voices are serviceable, they occasionally veer into caricature, which pulls you out of the moment. But these are quibbles.
