About This Audiobook

E.C.R. Lorac’s *Fell Murder* isn’t just another Golden Age mystery—it’s a cozy crime novel with teeth. Set against the stark, windswept beauty of the Lake District, the story unfolds with effortless precision, where every character’s motive is as tangled as the region’s misty hedgerows. Lorac’s plotting is a masterclass in restraint; she doles out clues so subtly you’ll kick yourself for not spotting them sooner. The prose is crisp, the dialogue crackles with dry wit, and the solution is as satisfying as a hot cup of tea after a long hike. If you crave mysteries that reward attention without drowning you in red herrings, this is your book.

Narrator Kris Dyer elevates the experience with a measured, velvety voice that suits Lorac’s measured prose. Dyer’s Scottish lilt adds authenticity to the regional flavor, and her pacing keeps the tension taut without rushing. The production is clean, with just enough ambient sound to immerse you in the setting—think rustling heather and distant sheep—without cluttering the narrative. This isn’t a flashy performance, but it’s a dependable one, perfect for listeners who want to sink into the story rather than be jolted by it.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I approached *Fell Murder* expecting another dusty relic from the 1940s, but Lorac’s sharp wit and meticulous plotting turned it into a genuine delight. Kris Dyer’s narration is the icing on the cake—her voice has a soothing quality that makes long drives or chores fly by, yet she never softens the story’s edge. The mystery itself is a slow burn, but a burn that’s worth the wait. Lorac’s characters feel real, not caricatures, and the rural setting is almost a character in its own right. The murder itself is brutal but not gratuitous, and the solution is clever enough to make you feel genuinely clever when you piece it together. My only quibble? The audiobook’s runtime feels a touch long for the material—some chapters drag slightly, and a tighter edit might’ve shaved off 15-20 minutes without losing any substance. Also, while Dyer’s narration is excellent overall, her rendition of a particularly pompous male character occasionally slips into caricature, which feels a bit over-the-top for Lorac’s otherwise restrained tone. But these are minor nitpicks. If you love mysteries where the journey is as rewarding as the destination, *Fell Murder* delivers. It’s the kind of book you’ll want to revisit, just to admire Lorac’s craft all over again.
