I’ll admit, I was skeptical when Nic de Jager’s narration pulled me into *Prey* with a voice that sounded like it belonged in a gritty podcast rather than an international thriller. But by the time Cupido’s detective team stumbled into the Karoo’s sunbaked silence, I was hooked. De Jager’s performance is the audiobook’s beating heart—his rendering of Griessel’s weary, world-weary Afrikaans is so authentic it’s almost distracting, while his portrayal of Daniel Darret’s French cynicism lands with the kind of dry precision that makes you believe he’s actually lived each scene. The pacing is relentless, though it occasionally stumbles in the second act when the plot juggles too many balls. Meyer’s dialogue sings, especially in the tense, staccato exchanges between Darret and his targets, but the middle third drags with bureaucratic tangents that feel more like filler than forward momentum. Still, the final third redeems everything: a chase through Bordeaux’s back alleys that’s equal parts *The Fugitive* and *Le Samouraï*, with a twist so brutal it leaves you gasping. The production is immaculate—no muffled lines, no jarring edits—just a smooth, immersive ride that makes the 14-hour runtime vanish. Minor quibble: the transition between Afrikaans and English occasionally feels abrupt, but it’s a small price for the authenticity. If you love thrillers where the personal is political and the chase feels like it’s happening in your own neighborhood, *Prey* is a masterclass.
