Simon Bubb’s narration is the audiobook’s secret weapon. His voice has the crisp authority of a documentary narrator, but it’s that slight, controlled rasp that sells the tension when Virr realises he’s not alone. Bubb differentiates between the cold detachment of Virr’s scientific mind and the creeping horror of his growing awareness that he’s been folded into something alien—not just in form, but in intent. The pacing, too, is masterful; Bubb refuses to linger too long on exposition, which keeps the story hurtling forward like a starship caught in a slipstream. My only quibble? Certain alien concepts are introduced with such rapid-fire detail that I occasionally lost track of which faction or technology belonged to whom. Still, the payoff in the final act more than compensates. The story’s blend of high-concept science and intimate character stakes makes it a standout in the overcrowded space-opera genre.
