Virtual Voice’s narration is a curious experiment—most of the time, it works. The AI nails the urgency in Brodie’s growls and Amelia’s sharper retorts, but there’s a hollow quality to some of the deeper male tones that makes Brodie’s softer moments feel a bit hollow. It’s a small critique in an otherwise polished package. Pacing-wise, the audiobook never drags, which is a mercy given how packed the 3-hour runtime is with forced marriage negotiations, near-death encounters, and slow-burning attraction. My biggest gripe? A few too many secondary characters feel like afterthoughts, their motivations glossed over in favor of Brodie and Amelia’s push-pull dynamic.
