I went into *Rebecca* expecting a dusty romance with a dash of feminist grit, but Woolf delivered something far grittier—a story that feels like it was hewn from the same soil as the West itself. Rebecca isn’t a heroine who sighs dramatically when a man rides into her life; she’s a woman who’s already buried one husband and buried a man twice in the first twenty minutes of this book. That’s not a typo—Woolf wastes no time establishing Rebecca as a survivor, and the story never lets up. The trail is a character here, a merciless force that chews up the weak and spits out the unprepared. Rebecca’s struggle to keep her siblings alive is tense in a way that doesn’t rely on melodrama; it’s tense because the stakes are real, and the threats are constant. That said, the AI narration is a double-edged sword. Virtual Voice’s performance lacks the emotional range to fully sell some of the quieter, more introspective moments—Rebecca’s internal monologues sometimes feel flattened by the synthetic delivery. And while the story’s unflinching realism is a strength, the abrupt tonal shifts between harrowing survival sequences and sudden bursts of romance left me wanting a little more cohesion in the rhythm. Still, these minor quibbles fade when you consider the audiobook’s immersive power. Hearing the story told in this unadorned, almost mechanical voice makes the human resilience at its core feel that much more remarkable. If you want a historical romance that doesn’t romanticize the past, *Rebecca* is a sharp, satisfying listen.
