Melanie Neale’s story is less about the thrill of the open sea and more about the slow erosion of a child’s sense of security when home is a 40-foot vessel ruled by an unpredictable father and the whims of the weather. Lia Frederick’s narration is the audiobook’s secret weapon. She doesn’t *perform* young Melanie so much as *channel* her—the flat, exhausted tone of a kid who’s learned not to ask too many questions, the way her voice tightens during scenes of real danger (like the time the family’s dinghy drifts away with their only fresh water aboard). The pacing mirrors the book��s structure: long stretches of monotony punctuated by sudden, heart-stopping crises. My only critique? The production occasionally suffers from uneven audio levels during the more intense passages, where Frederick’s hushed delivery gets lost under ambient noise (a minor but jarring distraction).
