I came into *Mail Order Doctor* expecting a sweet, if predictable, historical romance, but what I got was a quietly compelling narrative anchored by two deeply capable adults learning to trust more than just their instincts. Julia is refreshingly pragmatic—her internal monologue never veers into melodrama, and her reservations about love feel earned, not contrived. The romance unfolds through letters and small gestures, which Woolf handles with subtlety. That said, the pacing drags slightly in the middle third, where medical emergencies repeat without enough narrative variation. Still, the emotional payoff in the final act—especially a childbirth scene that had me holding my breath—more than makes up for it. Lia Frederick’s performance is the standout. She doesn’t attempt a wide range of accents or theatrical flair; instead, she embodies Julia with a calm, steady presence that feels authentic. Her soft vocal tone and precise diction make long stretches of introspection feel natural, not sluggish. The audiobook’s production is clean, with no distracting background effects, letting the strength of the writing and narration shine. My only critique? The male secondary characters occasionally blur together vocally, making it hard to distinguish townspeople in group scenes. But overall, this is a standout in the Western romance space—thoughtful, grounded, and genuinely moving.
