Woolf’s research shines in the details: the weight of a Colt revolver in Molly’s reticule, the way a banker’s ink-stained cuffs betray his lies. The romance isn’t insta-love; it’s a grudging alliance between two people who’ve learned trust is a liability, and Frederick’s narration sells every wary glance and reluctant concession. That said, the audiobook isn’t flawless. The villain’s voice veers into mustache-twirling territory—Frederick gives him a sneer that’s *too* broad for a story otherwise grounded in grit. And the final act rushes the emotional payoff; after so much slow-burn tension, Molly and the baron’s resolution needed another scene to land. Still, the production quality is crisp (no distracting edits or volume dips), and Frederick’s Molly is a masterclass in vocal acting—equal parts steel and vulnerability. If you’re tired of historical romances where the heroine’s biggest problem is a rumpled cravat, this one’s for you.
