About This Audiobook

Caleb Barnes returns from war carrying more than bullet scars—he’s burdened by a reputation he didn’t earn and a loneliness he can’t shake. But when he’s assigned to a high-stakes construction project alongside a sharp-witted engineer, Caleb’s about to discover that his worst enemy might be the walls he’s built around himself. *Doc* isn’t your average military romance; it’s a raw, unflinching look at the cost of service, where healing isn’t linear and redemption isn’t guaranteed. West crafts a hero who’s equal parts infuriating and irresistible, with a heroine who refuses to let him retreat into the shadows. The chemistry crackles from the first chapter, and the tension lingers long after the last page—this isn’t just a love story, it’s a reckoning. Narrator Mason Lloyd doesn’t just voice Caleb—he *becomes* him. His gravelly baritone cracks under the weight of Caleb’s pain, then snaps back with unexpected warmth when the character softens. The pacing is relentless, mirroring Caleb’s internal push-pull between self-destruction and reluctant hope. Lloyd’s performance elevates the audiobook into something visceral, making the emotional gut-punches hit harder than they would on the page. If you’ve ever stayed up late listening to a book because you *needed* to know what happened next, this is your next addiction.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit, I was skeptical going in. Military romances often fall into the same traps: the brooding hero with a tragic past, the stubborn heroine who chips away at his armor, and a plot that leans heavily on clichés. *Doc* could’ve been just another entry in that tired cycle—but Dahlia West sidesteps those pitfalls with razor-sharp dialogue and a hero who’s *actually* flawed in ways that feel real. Caleb isn’t just “tough on the outside, soft on the inside”; he’s prickly, self-sabotaging, and painfully aware of how little he deserves happiness. That makes his slow unraveling under the heroine’s stubborn kindness all the more compelling. Mason Lloyd’s narration is the secret weapon here. He nails the cadence of Caleb’s speech—short, clipped sentences when he’s defensive, a rougher growl when he’s pushed too far—and his chemistry with the female narrator (who voices the heroine) is electric. The production is clean, but the emotional rawness in Lloyd’s delivery makes up for any lack of immersive sound design. My one criticism? The secondary characters occasionally feel like afterthoughts, and the resolution wraps up a little too neatly. Still, by the time Caleb admits he’s afraid to want something good, I was already hooked. This is a romance for readers who crave depth over drama—and Lloyd sells it like a masterclass in vocal performance.
