Mason Lloyd’s narration is the secret weapon in *Tex*, turning what could’ve been a standard military romance into something far more immersive. His Tex is all gravel and restraint, the kind of voice you’d expect from a man who’s spent years in the service—gruff but not unkind, with a delivery that makes even the clumsiest lines feel intentional. Lloyd nails the emotional beats, too, especially in the quieter scenes where Abby’s vulnerability clashes with Tex’s careful stoicism. The pacing is deliberate, which is both a strength and a slight hurdle; if you’re looking for a quick, high-stakes romance, this might test your patience. I found myself nodding along to the slow unraveling of their chemistry, but I did wish West had balanced the introspective moments with a bit more external conflict to keep the momentum. Still, the production is crisp, with no distracting background noise, and Lloyd’s chemistry with the female narrator (who voices Abby) feels authentic enough to suspend disbelief. Minor critique: the side characters occasionally blur together, but that’s a small price for a book that feels so deeply grounded in its setting.
